About 'doctorate degree program'|How to do a Doctorate Degree Programme in Malaysia - Part 3
I entered college for the first time when I was 35 years old. I am now 48 years old and working on my doctorate degree. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Human Communication and two Master of Art degrees, one in Human Communication and the other in English with a Rhetoric emphasis. Strange? People often tell me that they find these two degrees an unlikely pairing, but what's unlikely about this pairing? I see the pairing as completely logical because Human Communication addresses communication among humans in various forms and writing is one of them. So, why not pair English with Human Communication? Has this pairing helped me? Yes, it has. I learned about audience. If you fail to consider audience, you have absolutely nothing, including direction in your life. Audience tells you how to live and what your next move will be. Take me, for instance, I wanted to become a union contract negotiator, so I first landed in the business area, but I knew this wasn't what I was looking for. I eventually found out that I needed to be in the Human Communication degree plan. I shifted to this program, but my heart sank when I discovered during one of my communication classes that businesses were weeding out true unions (like Teamsters) and replacing such unions with company-run unions. My audience no longer needed a union negotiator. I stayed in the Human Communication degree program, but I had no plan, at least not until I took my first Rhetoric class with Dr. Jeffrey Hobbs. His class immediately helped me realize that my audience controlled me, and I merely reacted. I became encouraged. I learned all I could and found I wanted more. So, I pursued the Master of Human Communication as quickly as I earned my Bachelor of Human Communication and decided to pair my first Master degree with a second one in English. I eventually found myself working as a teaching assistant and a Writing Center tutor. I watched closely while under the close direction of the English Department Chair and the Writing Center Director. I learned how to recognize my audience's needs during this time. I took everything that I'd learned from these two mentors and landed a full-time teaching position shortly after I graduated. I had some of the best teachers possible in both degree areas, so I felt more than prepared. I knew my stuff, and I'd learned to act in a truly ethical manner through my education. Shortly after I began my full-time teaching position, I discovered a short coming in my thinking, though. I thought my practical training was finished, but it wasn't. I found myself believing that I knew what I knew, and this would serve me well if I just coasted for a bit. Although, I was still working on my doctorate, I'd lost my sense of urgency, and this cost me dearly. My audience was changing, but I wasn't. I also recognized that other instructors seemed to be quickly moving ahead of me in the communication area. It didn't look good. The first thing that I needed to do was make some extra money, so I began writing for the Internet. It didn't stop here, though. I constantly found myself faced with issues of communication. I had to learn how to teach online to stay competitive with other instructors. (This, in itself, provides an ongoing challenge because technology continues to update itself on a regular basis.) I quickly discovered the need to write grant proposals, even though I'd rejected this earlier in my life. I also realized the benefit of an English as a Second Language (ESL) certification. I just realized that I needed to move forward because my audience continued to move forward. The point here is that I realized, and what I realized is a communicator cannot say no to any form of communication because communication continues to occur in different ways. Even more, it's not enough to say I need to learn or will eventually learn because communicating is about the here and the now, and it waits for nobody. A successful communicator does not move behind the flow or with the flow. A successful communicator moves right in front of the flow, always attending to audience. A good communicator always looks for new ways to communicate and ways to better the old. This is where the success really lies in communication. As a result, I have now transitioned from my blue-collar attitude that work is a 9 to 5 job. It isn't once you become a professional, and possibly even before. I no longer find myself just trying to coast as a teacher. I hold a new sense of urgency, and it's important that I never lose this sense of urgency because urgency serves as the driving force behind communication. As a result, I am now a forward-moving college instructor, learning how to stay in front of my audience, rather than lingering behind. I'm having to work hard to catch back up, but the point is I'm learning with a sense of urgency now. The bottom line: Earn a flexible degree and pair it with another to make yourself more marketable. Don't wait until you've completed your degree to use it. Step out for some practical learning while you're in the process of earning your degree and quickly learn from your mistakes. Watch your audience so that you will know what/how to deliver. Always try to stay ahead of your audience and do your best to hone your skills so that you can accommodate audience. Learn something new about communication every single day. What I really learned when I transitioned from the business area to the communication area is that human communication is business, and a big business at that. |
