About 'what is technical college'|...Take her laugh, for instance. I'd had a friend in college who had what everyone told her was an evil laugh, so she changed it. But the laugh...








When               I               graduated               from               high               school               at               16               I               knew               I               wasn't               ready               to               go               off               to               a               four               year               college.

I               also               knew,               because               he               told               me               that               my               father               wasn't               going               to               let               me               "take               time               off               from               school               to               find               myself".

Enter               the               local               community               college.

I               did               two               years               of               community               college               before               transferring               to               a               four               year               institution               and               I               was               happy               with               the               smaller               campus               and               class               sizes.

Now               that               I'm               preparing               myself               to               start               my               own               business,               community               college               seems               to               be               my               cheapest               and               most               convenient               choice.

As               a               Paulding               County               resident               my               options               are               currently               split               between               Chattahoochee               Technical               College,               North               Metro               College               and               Appalachian               Technical               College.

As               of               July               1,               2009,               five               days               before               the               start               of               the               summer               quarter,               these               three               schools               will               merge               to               become               Chattahoochee               Technical               College.

For               students               that               means               more               courses,               spread               over               eight               campuses               across               Bartow,               Cherokee,               Cobb,               Fannin,               Gilmer,               Paulding               and               Pickens               Counties.

To               be               eligible               for               these               schools               you               must               be               at               least               16               years               old               or               a               high               school               student               participating               in               joint               enrollment               program               through               an               agreement               with               a               local               school               system.
               For               example,               I               live               in               Dallas               and               work               in               Marietta               so               I               could               potentially               attend               classes               at               the               Marietta,               South               Cobb               or               North               Metro               campus               in               the               evenings               on               any               of               the               four               weekdays               when               I               work,               then               go               to               the               Paulding               campus               for               class               on               Friday               and               Saturday               when               I'm               not               working.

"Every               quarter               you               can               sign               up               for               class               at               whatever               campus               best               fits               your               schedule,"               says               Chattahoochee               Technical               College's               Director               of               External               Affairs               Jennifer               Nelson.

Classes               are               available               day               and               evening,               six               days               a               week               and               the               school               year               is               divided               into               spring,               summer,               fall               and               winter               quarters.
               If               a               class               time               doesn't               fit               in               your               schedule               you               can               take               the               course               online,               as               part               of               a               telecourse               through               CobbEd               TV,               or               do               hybrid               courses               which               are               taught               online               but               require               students               to               visit               campus               a               few               times               a               quarter               for               labs,               tests               and               discussions.
               How               to               Apply:
               Submit               a               completed               application               form               at               any               location               or               submit               one               online               before               the               deadline.

Pay               a               $15               non               refundable               application               fee.

Submit               official               transcripts               from               high               school               or               GED               and               all               colleges               previously               attended.

Take               the               Compass               Test               for               advisement               or               job               placement               or               submit               official               college               transcript(s)               from               an               accredited               institution               documenting               satisfactory               completion               of               English               and               mathematics               course               work               and/or               applicants               may               submit               official               SAT,               ACT,               CPE,               COMPASS               or               ASSET               scores,               provided               these               scores               are               no               more               than               five               (5)               years               old               and               meet               the               Georgia               Department               of               Technical               and               Adult               Education's               minimum               program               scores               for               program               entrance.

Average               time               to               graduate:
               Associate               Degree               Courses:               2               years               or               8               quarters
               Diploma               Courses:               12-18               months
               Technical               Certificates               of               Credit:               15               to               50               credit               hours               depending               on               the               program
               Certificates               of               Credit               for               High               School               Students               Only:               16               -               25               hours               depending               on               course               of               study
               Making               College               Affordable
               Chattahoochee               Technical's               cost               per               credit               hour               is               $40.

Total               semester               cost               with               a               full               load               is               around               $500               including               books               and               campus               fees               but               you               can               cut               that               somewhat               by               buying               used               textbooks               where               available               and               selling               your               books               back               at               the               end               of               the               quarter.
               The               Hope               Grant               is               available               to               all               Georgia               residents               in               a               diploma               or               certificate               of               credit               program.

               According               to               Nelson,               "95%               of               our               students               are               covered               by               the               Hope               Grant               it               covers               tuition               and               has               a               book               allowance".

But               students               should               be               careful               to               make               sure               their               course               of               study               is               a               qualifying               diploma               or               certificate               of               credit               program."
               The               Workforce               Investment               Act               is               a               federally               funded               program               which               is               geared               towards               the               unemployed,               veterans               and               seniors               re               entering               the               job               market.

Chattahoochee               Technical               is               one               of               the               training               providers               in               the               state               of               Georgia.

               The               Montgomery               GI               Bill               can               also               help               veterans               as               it               covers               diploma               and               degree               programs.

               Applying               Your               Skills               to               the               Job               Market
               The               college               helps               students               with               job               placement.

According               to               Jennifer               Nelson,               "We               offer               an               inside               track               because               of               our               relationships               with               community               business."               This               is               not               a               guarantee               but               it               is               a               definite               plus               in               the               more               competitive               job               market.

The               Campus               Career               Center               is               free               to               all               current               students               and               alumni.

Plus               through               partnerships               with               local               business,               Chattahoochee               Technical               provides               training               to               address               job               openings.
               Students               like               me               who               want               to               start               their               own               business               can               take               advantage               of               the               entrepreneurship               program               which               is               offered               for               an               associate               degree,               a               diploma               and               a               certificate               of               credit.
               With               all               that               being               said,               no               one               wants               to               attend               a               school               where               they're               not               comfortable.

I               was               very               impressed               by               my               visit               to               Chattahoochee               Tech.

I               checked               my               watch               when               I               entered               the               building               and               I               was               only               there               for               five               minutes               before               someone               offered               to               help               me.

All               of               the               staff               in               each               office               I               visited               from               registration               to               financial               aid               stopped               what               they               were               doing               to               help               me               with               forms               and               advice.

They               all               seemed               knowledgeable               and               either               answered               my               questions               or               referred               me               to               the               appropriate               place               for               the               information               I               needed.

North               Metro               Tech's               Acworth               campus               which               I               visited               on               Sunday               was               easy               to               navigate               with               plenty               of               signs               to               guide               me               so               I               didn't               have               to               worry               as               much               about               getting               lost               like               on               a               big               college               campus.

Together               with               lower               cost,
               For               many,               the               path               to               success               lies               in               making               strategic               career               moves               throughout               their               working               lifetime.
