About 'online university graduate programs'|10 Real Universities Offering Real Online Degrees
Thinking about going to college online to become a certified classroom teacher? I did, and spent more than $20,000 to achieve this dream. However, this dream became a nightmare for me when I could not maintain full-time teaching jobs with these online credentials because I was still considered in my state to not be "highly qualified". "Highly Qualified" Issues The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires that, "the teacher holds a minimum of a bachelor's degree; and has obtained full state certification or holds an state teaching license, and does not have certification or licensure requirements waived on an emergency, temporary, or provisional basis; and has demonstrated subject-matter competency in each of the academic subjects in which the teacher teaches, in a manner determined by the state." I earned a B.A degree in Journalism, worked as a substitute teacher in my school district for more than a decade, but did not pass the Praxis II state subject assessment in Spanish, or complete enough hours in college to qualify for a Major in Spanish. I completed 12 hours in Spanish as an undergraduate, taught Spanish part-time at a local Baptist church school one year, and earned a master's degree in Secondary Education online. However, these remarkable credentials only allowed me to teach full-time (under contract) two years, in two different school districts, under an Emergency teaching certificate, and one-year provisionally. Some Pros and Cons of Online Teacher Programs The master's degree I earned online was an Arizona approved teacher preparation program, is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and is a member of the North Central Association (of Colleges and Universities). I received a degree in Secondary Education and an Institutional Recommendation (IR) from this online university, but no Arizona state teaching certificate. In Alabama, I need to be issued an actual teacher's certificate from Arizona to request the Alabama State Department of Education to consider granting me a reciprocal (regular) teaching certificate in the subject area I wish to teach. Six Reasons Certifying Me As "Highly Qualified" Should Have Been Easy: · I had been subbing in one school district more than ten years. · I completed countless hours of professional development training in core teacher skills and workshops as a sub and as a regular full-time teacher. · I almost completed a Minor in Spanish. · I taught Spanish to students in grades k-12 nearly three years with outstanding results. · I completed 10 weeks of student teaching in Language Arts in my school district. · I earned a master's degree in Secondary Education. All of these "I" letters above does not mean that I am narcissistic in any way! Back to Reality At the end of May, my former school principal called me into his office. I hoped that he was going to tell me that the school board was very pleased with my stellar teaching achievements(which he did), and that the school board decided to extend my teaching contract at least two more years to allow me enough time to get "highly qualified(which he didn't). The most difficult part of not having my teaching contract renewed was saying goodbye to all the wonderful students I had taught that school year, and had motivated to set high goals in their lives. I hated to also say goodbye to some of my colleagues that had bonded with as personal friends. The long drive home to tell my mother that I would not be returning to teach in that school district was even sadder. Humility is a Silver Lining The good news is that I did not purchase a new car when I got my teaching contracts, and my old car was paid-in-full. The duplex house that I live in next door to my mother is also paid-in-full with no mortgages or liens on it. I am in relatively good health per my last physical at the VA Hospital where I receive healthcare at no costs beyond a $2-$4 co-payment for any prescriptions I need; so worrying about employee health and medical insurance is not a problem for me. I did not burn any bridges when I got my teaching contracts, so I was able to return to my former school district and sub. I get calls to sub daily! Since I earn $60 a day as an on-call sub, my hefty student loans are deferred, and I can receive dental care at reduced costs based on my low income. In this fragile economy today, we must learn to do more with less. |
