Some               instructors               are               more               effective               than               others               in               making               good               use               of               online               instruction.

You               do               not               want               to               sign               up               for               a               poorly               designed               course,               because               it               is               your               learning               and               your               grade               that               will               suffer.

               Conclusion
The               convenience               of               taking               a               college               course               "on               your               computer"               rather               than               in               a               classroom               is               enormous.

It               saves               money               and               time               and               makes               you               impervious               to               weather-related               closures.

It               can               make               content               available               to               you               that               would               not               otherwise               be               available.

However,               some               content               is               not               appropriate               for               online               instruction               (such               as               "hands               on"               skill               instruction)               and               close               faculty-student               bonds               (the               kind               that               lead               to               strong               letters               of               recommendation               for               graduate               or               professional               school)               do               not               result               from               online               instruction.

Studying               on               your               own               at               home               on               your               computer               can               be               socially               isolating.

It               does               nothing               to               develop               your               skills               at               expressing               yourself               orally,               thinking               "on               your               feet,"               or               making               friendships               with               your               fellow               students.
If               you               are               a               highly               motivated               returning               adult               student               with               a               full-time               job,               heavy               family               obligations,               living               at               a               distance               from               an               appropriate               brick               and               mortar               college,               your               situation               is               most               suited               to               reaping               the               benefits               of               online               instruction.

However,               if               you               are               an               18-22               year               old               student               living               on               or               near               a               college               campus,               needing               to               form               attachments               to               professors               and               fellow               students,               easily               distractible,               and               suffering               from               intermittent               motivation,               you               are               not               a               strong               candidate               for               online               courses.

In               fact,               you               could               become               one               of               my               advisees               who               responds,               when               asked               "Why               did               you               fail               this               course?"               with               a               shrug               of               the               shoulders               and               the               all-too-common               reply:               "I               took               it               online."
